Yaxa, Cabaret

1973 and 1974 · Commercial · 15 seconds each

Epeco / Seitsenmainos / Filmi Ässä

Two commercials for Yaxa perfumed cologne deodorant, 15 seconds each. The first, in 1973, was made in black and white, since most people only had black and white televisions. The second, Cabaret, was made in colour in 1974. By then Marjut had moved to London, and she travelled back to Helsinki to work on it, inviting her colleague Monique Renault to help her. The television critics praised its excellent animation, and a choice of style that no competitor could copy without punishment: it would all go to Yaxa's account.

Yaxa, 1973, in black and white: five drawn deodorant bottles numbered 13, 15, 17 and 19 stand among clouds, each printed with a woman’s face and the words Deodorant Perfumed Cologne.
The first film, 1973
Still from Yaxa Cabaret: five pink-capped bottles numbered 12 on an orange ground, a dancing girl with flying black hair drawn on each. Still from Yaxa Cabaret: a white face with closed green eyelids and green lips, framed in black hair, on a sage green ground. Still from Yaxa Cabaret: two small blue silhouettes of dancers face each other on a pale green ground, one reaching out an arm. Still from Yaxa Cabaret: women with butterfly wings in orange, blue and pink fly over a row of yellow bottles numbered 11.
Cabaret, 1974

Excellent animation is characteristic of the Yaxa films: so this one too. Butterflies, hippie curls, bursting scents and the numbers of the products carry on the Yaxa line consistently, which no competing brand could imitate without punishment. What do we mean by punishment? The advertising going to Yaxa's account, of course.
