The title card is a Finnish saying, “PAINU NIIN PITKÄLLE KUIN PIPPURI KASVAA…” (roughly “clear off as far as pepper grows”), and the film takes it literally: a man is thrown out, away from everything familiar, into a culinary adventure. Live action and cut-out animation combined.

A dark ornate plaque with cream lettering set on a plain pale card. A man carrying a sack strides away from a small yellow wooden house and a birch tree. A green railway carriage crosses a dusk landscape of pink sky and dark firs. A man in shirt and braces flings his arms wide in a yellow doorway. Two windmills stand behind the green train above the wide flower field. The Arc de Triomphe and a tower lit blue at night, two spice tins standing below. Two spice jars tip forward above ranks of identical jars on a yellow ground. Two spice jars stand before the drawn palace, birds crossing a coloured sky. A drawn pyramid carries a banner above huts, a train and a pink sky. Shelf of Kulinaari jars and sachets on magenta, the red Paulig name at the corner.

Heard in the film: “Niin, makujen maailma on avara. Kulinaari, kulinaari, kulinaari, kulinaari. Tee unohtumaton maustematka. Pauligin Kulinaari, paljon enemmän kuin pippuri.”
