Nami Nami
Valio / MY / Vistakuva
Cel animation from end to end, set in a wood where the snow is painted pink and lilac rather than white and blue, with mauve shadows and a flat pale sky. A badger digs itself up out of a snow bank, a tan bear cub and a dark red beaver meet by a striped ball with satchels over their shoulders, and the cub holds out a pot of pudding. The badger then takes the film over, eating, licking a paw and talking straight to camera in big close-up, and when asked who it is answers ystävänne, Miiru Mäyrä, your friend Miiru Mäyrä. The way into the pack shot is neatly done: the painted wood behind the badger gives way to diagonal yellow and white stripes that turn out to be the pot's own label, so the background has become the packaging before you notice. It ends with three pots standing in the snow, each wrapped with one of the animals just seen, beside the Nami nami brush script and the Valio oval, the cast turned into the product. The drawing is soft and round, thick outlines, full cheeks and long lashes, nearer a picture book than a poster.
Heard in the film, machine transcript, not checked: Onkos teillä mitään syötävää? Onhan meillä, ole hyvä. Banaanin ja suklaamakuin. Nami, nami. Uusi banaanimakunen suklaavanukas. Oli se. Kuka sä oikeastaan olet? Ystävänne, Miiru Mäyrä. Nami, nami.
